YASHEELAN MAYAN RUINS

Often referred to as the “buildings in the jungle”, when visiting the Yasheelan Mayan ruins, you will see why.  Nestled deep within the jungle, shrouded by tall trees are the ruins that have quite an interesting history.  Although many aspects of these ruins are fascinating, the ornate architecture and detailed hieroglyphics are considered magnificent exhibits of the skill that the Mayan people possessed, especially during this time.  To accomplish what they did, the people had amazing abilities and engineering skills, which can still be enjoyed today.

The Mayan people were known for their magnificent temple creations.  They were also talented in the area of culture, astronomy, and the arts.  Two things that keep our interest in the Mayan civilization are their unmatched talent and their mysterious demise.  With the Yasheelan Mayan ruins, among some of the other ruins, you will be mesmerized by the panoramic views of the city that provide you with a small glimpse into the lives of these people.

As you walk through the Yasheelan Mayan ruins, you will immediately notice that the people took great pride in everything they did.  Each piece of material used in the building of the structures is perfectly placed and the artwork extremely detailed and ornate.  Although there are many wonderful structures, the temples built by the Mayan civilization are simply breathtaking.  You will find incredible hand-carved stones, floors adorned with stucco decorations and murals on the walls.

All of the Mayan temples were used for religious purposes.  Take the Sun Temple as an example - this particular temple was built specifically to worship the sun god.  Within the walls of these temples, the Mayan people would perform several ceremonies.  You will even find that many of the Sun Temples are designed with holes in the roof, allowing then to look up to the sky during ceremonies so they have a true time of worship.

Remember that in addition to the Yasheelan Mayan ruins, there are many others to explore.  One that is enormous and quite impressive is the Uxmal ruins.  These ruins are designed with a long flight of stairs that go up one side of the temple, leading to a smaller temple at the top.  Keep in mind that in addition to the regular Mayan temples, there was also temples built with observatories.

The Mayan people were very studious in the area of astronomy.  Therefore, in the case of the city of Chichen Itza, the people would go there to study the movement of the earth, stars, and Venus.  Each of the ruins has a very rich history, making them wonderful for exploration.  As you walk through room by room, you will get a sense of what it was like to live with the Mayan people, marveling at their advanced skills with very few tools and no modern day technology.
