ZACATECAS
Zacatecas Mexico is known
as the city with a face of stone and a heart of silver.
Although this city is not technically connected with
the colonial circle, it is still a city fabled of silver
located just to the north of Guanajuato.
With unrivaled beauty and Mexican pride, Zacatecas is
a magnificent place to visit.
Although getting to Zacatecas is a tough trip, it is
worth the effort.
Located at 8,100 feet
above sea level, this city is the second highest in Mexico.
During pre-Hispanic days, this city was inhabited but
not founded until 1546 after one of the world’s richest
silver veins was discovered.
During the 16th century, there were a
number of religious orders in Zacatecas. Because of the vast wealth and position of this country, it
remained strong throughout the 19th century.
Then in the early part of the 20th
century, one of the greatest Revolutionary military battles
took place in Zacatecas during which time Pancho Villa’s
troops took power over more than 12,000 soldiers serving
under General Huerta.
Nestled in a beautiful
ravine between two impressive hills called Cerro del Grillo
and Cerro de La Bufa, the streets are covered with
cobblestone with winding alleyways that lead up to
magnificent colonial buildings and beautifully landscaped
parks. In Zacatecas, you will discover an amazing collection of
ancient art from around the globe and two of Mexico’s
finest museums. Because
of its rich history and beautiful present life, people come
to Zacatecas from all over the world to experience it.
When visiting Zacatecas,
you will have time to eat in a number of good restaurants,
be pampered at some wonderful hotels, enjoy an aerial
tramway, taking you high above the city’s streets, of
simply shop at places where local things are made. The Cathedral is always a favorite, which is the heart of
Zacatecas. Built
in the early 18th century, the cathedral is made
from pink to burnt orange stone and boasts magnificent bell
towers.
Then, there is the Plaza
de Armas, which is the main square of the city.
Dating back as well to the 18th century,
the white exterior handsome, enhanced with the pink stone
and ornamental wrought iron balconies.
One of the most impressive places in Zacatecas is the
Teatro Caledron, an elegant three-story building with an
interior of Art Nouveau and French.
Finally, one of the best views of the city can be
seen from Cerro la Bufa, a rocky mound of sand in the
downtown area. From this hill, you can see everything to include the
beautiful colonial buildings, museums, and gigantic bronze
statues of war heroes.
