THOMAS
CAVENDISH
Thomas Cavendish was an
English navigator born in 1560.
In 1585, he was the commander of a ship in the
flotilla under the leadership of Sir Richard Renville, sent
by Sir Walter Raleigh to help establish Virginia’s first
colony.
One year later, Cavendish commanded three vessels,
sailing from England on a voyage that would take him around
the world, which would be one of two trips.
On this trip, he crossed from the west coast of West
Africa to Patagonia.
Once there, Cavendish discovered a wonderful harbor,
naming it Port Desire.
Cavendish then ravaged
Spanish towns, moving on to the west coast of South America.
From there, he continued his journey, going through
the Philippines, East Indies, and Cage of Good Hope.
He returned to England in 1588 after having been at
sea for two years.
His second trip around the world began in 1591 but
unfortunately, the outcome was disastrous. This
time, the fleet consisting of five ships was dispersed, and
Cavendish died while at sea.
However, he left his mark
on history as the second Englishman ever to lead a
successful expedition around the world.
For this reason, he played a very important role in
history.
In fact, Cavendish played an important role in all of
his expeditions, which became known as Roanoke Voyages.
Like many other people within his generation and
class, Cavendish turned to piracy to make his fortune.
He also sailed with many impressive people to include
John White who was the artist whose paintings would portray
the sea for those who would never sail, and Thomas Harriot,
a brilliant scientist who would go on to write accounts of
Cavendish.
With all of his voyages,
Cavendish became a very rich and famous man.
In fact, his voyages have been celebrated in a number
of ballads.
Unfortunately, Cavendish soon blew all his money and
trying to regain his vast wealth, that was when his second
voyage around the world was scheduled.
However, he outlived his greatness with his death at
sea coming at a very young age.
