SAN
BLAS ISLANDS
Just a short distance from
Panama City are the San Blas Islands, a place where you can
take a trip back in time, a place once inhabited by the Kuna
Indians.
The Archipelago consists of some 100 islets, sill
unnamed, 113 islets with names, and 30 islands.
On the San Blas Islands, women were skirts and
vibrantly colored blouses.
On the front and back of the blouse you would see the
famous Molas, which is authentic Indian art.
In addition, the men and women commonly wear beaded
ornaments on the ankles and wrist, again colorful and bold.
Other daily wear includes pectorals, chains, and gold
nose rings.
When visiting the San Blas Islands, you
have the opportunity of a lifetime by staying on an
uninhabited island.
Other activities include a fishing trip, watching, or
participating in traditional dances or rites, trying
submarine or diving fishing, wading in crystalline waters,
or lying on a hammock to enjoy the warm sun and gentle
breezes.
This type of diversity is what makes the San Blas
Islands such a great place to visit and spend quality
time.
The beaches on this island are white and
pristine.
In addition, the coastline borders the Pacific Ocean
and Caribbean Ocean.
There are beautiful lagoons, peaceful bays, and a
number of islands that can be visited.
Because of such diversity and so many changes of
scenery, you will certainly find a number of things suitable
specific to you.
Some of the islands are quiet and tranquil with no
other person around while other beaches are lined with
people all soaking up the sun.
You will even find hidden beaches where the
rainforest comes right up the sea.
The interesting thing about the beaches
around the San Blas Islands is the varying color.
For example, some of the islands have pure, white
sand while others have black sand, golden sand, and salt and
pepper sand.
Even the color of the water changes from an inky blue
to sapphire to turquoise .
Then you have the sunsets, which create their own
display of color such as purple, pink, orange, red, and pearl gray.
Because of this, the San Blas Islands are a favorite
destination.
Throughout the area of the San Blas
Islands are national marine parks where you can enjoy
snorkeling and/or scuba diving.
However, the fishing is excellent.
For this reason, people come from near and far to
enjoy the abundance and variety of fish.
Other things to do one or around the San Blas Islands
includes surfing, diving, boating, and sea kayaking, a
popular sport.
The San Blas Islands are
one of the best-kept secrets!
Interestingly, explorers such as Francisco Pizarro,
Vasco Nunez de Balboa, and even Christopher Columbus all
found their way at one time or another to these islands.
That means in addition to the magnificent beaches,
water, and sunsets, you can share in an important part of
history where pirates and treasures were once commonplace.
