CUERNAVACA
The capital of Morelos,
Cuernavaca may be big in heart but small in size.
For a long time, Cuernavaca was known as the City of
the Eternal Spring, a name that translates to “near the
trees.”
Situated at more than 5,000 feet above sea level, the
climate is warm and sunny although at night temperatures
become cool.
In Cuernavaca, you will find palatial houses all
tucked away behind tall walls with year round vegetation
with magnificent blooms and sub-tropical gardens.
One of the great things
about Cuernavaca is the incredible archeological ruins and
haciendas.
Other features are the natural spas and beautiful
landscape.
This city also boasts some of the best language
schools where cultural activities and special programs are a
part of the curriculum.
Although this city is rich in history, it is located
just 45 minutes from Mexico City.
Cuernavaca was first
founded 700 years ago just about a mile up in the Sierra
Madra Mountains.
Interestingly, the Pyramid of Teopanzolco now rises
in one of the residential neighborhoods, which is not far
from the location where Mesoamerican high priests at
Xochicalso had studied astronomy around 600 AD.
In fact, these very priests were the ones who
arranged the calendar.
Other evidence from pre-Hispanic days are seen to
include a 14-ton engraved stone now named Chimalli, as well
as the lizard carved in stone seen in San Anton.
Cuernavaca remained the
third major sugar cane producer around the world until
around 1910, at which time, Puerto Rico and Hawaii too the
lead.
Then at the time when the Mexican Revolution started,
the majority of haciendas in Cuernavaca were burned with a
few being restored into modern day, luxury hotels.
This tropical city is modern, featuring a number of
research institutes and industrial parks, as well as more
than 100 different industries, 17 universities, businesses,
and more.
One of the main
reputations of Cuernavaca is this being a place where people
can go to breathe in clean air and relax in a beautiful
climate.
Filled with lush gardens, day spas, golf courses,
tennis courts, restaurants, top quality hotel
accommodations, bathing resorts, and other pampering
services, Cuernavaca is indeed a top location for resting.
However, this city also offers a number of outdoor
activities such as horseback riding, mountain climbing,
hiking, fishing, water skiing, hunting, swimming,
snorkeling, and so much more.
Cuernavaca offers a number
of tourist attractions such as the Palace of Cortes.
This palace was built in 1533 as an Aztec temple.
However, in the summertime, the Palace of Cortes was
the home of Hernan Cortes, the conqueror.
Today, the Palace of Cortes is home to many wonderful
museums.
The Borda Garden is a famous residence that was built
in the 17th century by Don Manuel de la Borda.
However, this was also the resident home of the
Emperor Maximiliano de Habsburgo.
Today, you can enjoy walking among the beautiful
gardens or take time to visit the museum.
